How to Read Performance Guide

U Factor: (inverse of R Value)- The heat flow rate through a given construction expressed in Btu/hr/ft2/F. Values are normally given for NFRC/ASHRAE winter conditions of 0 degrees outdoor temperature, 70 degrees indoor temperature, 15 mph wind and no solar load. U-values can be expressed in terms of the glass alone (Ucog) or for the entire window (Uwindow) which includes the effect of the frame and the spacer material. The lower the number the better the insulating value.

R Value: Higher number the better

SHADING COEFFICIENT (SC) — The ratio of solar heat gain through a glazing to the solar heat gain through a single lite of 1/8″ (3.0mm) glass. Dimensionless and varying between 0 and 1, the smaller the number, the better the glazing is at preventing solar gain. The shading coefficient is specific to normal incidence angle and is being phased out in favor of the solar heat gain coefficient value. The lower the number, the less solar heat gain.

SOLAR HEAT GAIN COEFFICENT (SHGC) — The fraction of incident solar radiation which enters a building as heat. It is based on the sum of the solar energy transmittance + the inwardly flowing fraction of absorbed solar energy on all lites of the glazing. Note that the smaller the number, the better the glazing is at preventing solar heat gain. This value is preferred over the shading coefficient since it can be used for solar incidence angles other than normal to the glass surface. It can be expressed in terms of the glass alone (SHGCcog) or total unit value (SHGCwindow).

RELATIVE-HEAT GAIN (RHG) — The total amount of heat gain through a glazing system at NFRC/ASHRAE specified summer conditions, incorporating the U-value and the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient. The conditions are 230 Btu/hr/ft2, outdoor temperature of 89 degrees F, indoor temperature of 75 degrees F, and 7.5 mph wind. This value is expressed in terms of Btu/hr/ft2. The lower the number, the less heat gain.

VISIBLE LIGHT TRANSMITTANCE — In the visible spectrum (380 to 720 nanometers), the percentage of light that is transmitted through the glazing relative to the C.I.E. [Commission International de I’Eclairage (International Commission on Illumination)] standard observer. The higher the number, the more clarity of the glass.

UV TRANSMISSIONS (Tuv) — The percentage of ultra violet rays that enter a room through the glazing system. It is a predictor of potential fading damage. Lower percentages indicate less fading potential. (UV rays are those with a wavelength ranging from 0.30 to 0.38 nanometers). The lower the number the less fade potential.

LBL DAMAGE FUNCTION (Tdw-K) — This function is another way of expressing UV Transmission. It is a better predictor of potential fading damage than UV Transmission. Lower values indicate less fading potential. The LBL Damage Function is a weighted value which takes into account that as the wavelength of the UV rays get shorter, the fading damage potential increases. Therefore, two glazing systems with the same UV transmission may have different LBL Damage Function values because one allows more “shorter” wavelength rays to pass through than the other.


How to Replace Door Sweep on Hurd Swinging Patio Door

1. Remove the door panel.  Lay some type of protection on the surface that you are working on.  Tip the panel edge and remove the old sweep from the bottom rail.  Clean off any old sealant on the bottom rail of the panel.

 

2. Apply a new bead of silicone sealant along the outside edge of the bottom rail of your door panel.  Also apply a new bead of silicone to the new sweep as shown below in the picture with the arrows.

3. Now attach the new sweep using galvanized nails to secure it to the door panel bottom rail.  Clean off any excess silicone that may squeeze out.

 

4. Reinstall the operating panel.  To prevent any water leakage, place a small cap bead of clear silicone sealant between the lip of the panel sweep and the panel.

1. The amount of sash drag (a sash is the operating part of a casement window) that this hinge will correct for is dependent on the ratio of the sash width vs. sash height. To calculate the amount of sash drag adjustment for any given window size, take the ratio of the width to height multiplied by 1/16″.

Example: sash size equals 24″ x 36″ width to eight ratio is .667 Total adjustment is .66 x 1/16″ = .042 (Approx. 3/64″)

2. To adjust the casement sash: First fully open the window. Next step the Adjustment wrench (Part # 190 To by go to: www.RandRwindow.com under Parts –  Miscellaneous) onto the base of the stud, found between the support arm and the track of the lower hinge. Swinging the wrench away from the lock side of the window will decrease the about of sash drag. The maximum sash drag adjustment is reached when the stud flats are parallel to the track. Note: Turning the stud flats beyond parallel will not increase sash drag correction.

3. For severe sash drag, a similar procedure can be sued on the upper hinge. Upper hinge adjustment is made by swinging the wrench toward the lock side of the window. Maximum adjustment is obtained when the stud flats are parallel to the track. Note: Maximum adjustment may cause biding as the window is closed, please use caution.

Horizontal and Vertical Hinge Adjustment

The door is set up with two (2) horizontal (guide adjustable hinges, and one (1) vertically (set) adjustable hinge per panel. The horizontal hinges are located in the top and bottom positions, and the vertical hinge is located in the middle position.

Adjustments are made with a 3/32″ hex wrench. Never use a powered screw driver to make adjustments. Adjust only by hand!

Vertical Adjustment (To lift and lower the door)

Vertical adjustment allows up to 1/4″ total movement. Each rotation of the screw represents approximately a .0008″ travel for fine tune adjustment.

Step 1: Open door panel to access hinge adjustment screw.

Step 2: Loosen the adjustment screws on the top and bottom horizontal adjusting hinges to allow for easier vertical adjustment.

Step 3: Turn the hex drive in the middle (vertically adjusting) hinge either clockwise or counter-clockwise to raise or lower the door. The vertical hinge is marked with an arrow to indicate which direction the door will move when the hex drive is turned.

Step 4: Raise or lower panel accordingly to center the door panel in the opening.

Horizontal Adjustment (to move the door closer or away from the hinge side jamb)

Horizontal Adjustment allows up to 3/16″ total movement. three (3) turns of screw.

Step 1: Open door penal to access hinge adjustment screw.

Step 2: Adjust top and/or bottom hinge hex screw to align reveal between door frame and panel.

Step 3: Counterclockwise will increase reveal, clockwise will decrease reveal. Gap should be equal along entire length between frame an panel.

Installation and Handing Instructions:

Tools required: Philips Screwdriver

Determine handing direction from exploded view below (XO or OX)

On the back side of the inside handle there is an “E” shaped guide locating the actuator lever. The actuator should be moved to one end. Align with the hub of the lock as shown in the detail.

Place the inside handle against door while inserting actuator into vertical slotted hub of mortise lock. Install two 8-32 x 2 1/2″* length screw for clad door provided through the inside handle to attach outside pull (and plastic shim on clad door). DO NOT USE POWER DRIVERS TO INSTALL HANDLE SCREWS!

To install Keeper Plate follow directions below.

Optional key cylinder: cut the tail piece to 3/4″ length.

*2 3/8″ length screw for wood exterior door

Keeper Installation Instructions:

Install hardware as shown above

Before installing the Keeper Plate hold the Keeper Locator Template in place against the mortise lock.

Close the door firmly, allowing the keeper locator template to make the location for the keeper screws in the side jamb.

Install the keeper with two #8 x 1 1/4″ screws and adjust to the proper height.

Adjust mortise lock hoot using a common paint screwdriver until the hook is properly extended. Close door. Lock door and check for excessive play. Readjust the hook until the door will lock snug.

Casement Window

Remove the operating sash:

  • Crank sash open and remove the operator arm off the sash bracket.
  • Remove the straight arm (if you have it) of the operator off the track shoe
  • Close up the operator so arms are out of the way
  • Slide the upper and lower hinge clips off the hinge track
  • Slide the sash towards the center – where there is a release slot on the upper and lower hinge tracks

Replacing the hinge and hinge track

  • Remove the defective hinge track off the fame by removing the screws
  • Install the new hinge track and screw back into place
  • Remove the defective hinge from the sash rail by removing the screws.
  • Install the new hinge and screw back into place
  • (Adjustable Hinge Tracks are Now Standard).
  • Replace the sash by reversing the above instructions on how to remove the sash

815 / 816 Door Hinge Adjustment Instructions

Vertical And Horizontal Adjustment For 815 and 816 Hinge.

Each hinge has both a Vertical and Horizontal adjustment. Hinges are Handed Left Hand & Right Hand. Click on links below to order.

To Lower Door:

  1. Turn “V” screw on top and middle hinges counter clockwise until its stops
  2. Now slowly turn “V” screw on bottom hinge, counter clockwise to lower door to desired position. Close door and check for alignment.
  3. When door is properly aligned turn “V” screw on top and middle hinge clockwise until its snug. Aprox. same position as “V” screw on bottom hinge.
  4. Adjustment Complete

To Raise Door:

  1. Turn “V” screw clockwise on bottom hinge until door raises to desired position. Close door and check alignment.
  2. Now turn “V” screw clockwise on top and middle hinge until screw is snug. Approx. same position as screw on bottom hinge.
  3. Adjustment Complete

To Adjust Door Horizontally:

Turning the “H” screw clockwise will move the door away from the hinged jamb

Turning the “H” screw counter clockwise will move the door closer to the hinged jamb.

All three hinges may require adjustment to achieve proper horizontal alignment.

How To Replace Bushing Kit On Hurd Door

QUICK INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Remove two mounting screws from interior of handle.
  2. Remove old “c” clip, then retainer and spring, etc. as you see in the picture.
  3. Install new parts in reverse order.
  4. Note:  The spring will be stiff and it may take you more than one time to get it in place.
  5. Replace two mounting screws.

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS:

The brushing kit pictured below is brass (older style). The bushing kit you will receive is black metal. Part# 701

  1. Notice the bushing is turned to the open side before it is placed in the trim plate lever bore. In the next picture you can see a stop on the lever bore that prevents the lever from over rotation. Placing the bushing, as shown, with the open area allows the bushing to rotate plus or minus about 60 degrees. Once the bushing is placed in the bore check to make sure the ClockWise (CW) and CClockWise (CCW) freedom of the bushing. Notice the groove, around the bottom of the bushing, you will use to attach the snap ring (seen in the upper left had comer of the 3rd picture down – it looks like a “C”).701-1
  2.  The Bushing is lowered into the lover bore Again after you have placed the bushing flush with the trim projection into the lever bore, check the CW & CCW rotation and free rotation of the bushing from stop to stop.Hold the bushing in the trim plate, turn the assembly over an place it on a soft cloth or something other non-marring surface so you can begin the assembly of the centering member spring & the snap right.The bushing must be in contact with the surface you will be working on to support the pressure applied during the assembly process that follows.701-2
  3. In this picture, for the first time, you see the centering member positioned properly above the lever bushing. Notice the working features of the centering member: 1. the matching inner keys on the ring for engaging the lever bushing (this ensures that they work in unison), 2. There is a tab bent down 90 degrees on the end facing the bottom of the trim – more clearly seen in the next picture. 3. This formed tab will be in contact with the one side or the other of the coil spring at all times, applying torque to the lever  trying to rotate the lever to the horizontal position. 4. during the assembly the centering member will also be used to help the spring installer control the spring during the assembly of the spring to into the springs operating groove.701-3
  4. In this picture you can see who the spring is started in the groove against the centering member 90 degree tab and the fixed stop in the trim plate. Remember, to maintain control of the spring, you will need to keep down pressure on the centering member. This will create a trap for this open end of the spring. In the next picture you see the staring position of both ends of the springs positioned  for compression into the spring pocket.701-3
  5. You can now see both sends of the spring in the start position for compression into the spring groove. Though you do not see the installers fingers controlling the centering member (CM), because we wanted you to see, the starting spring position more clearly, you WILL need to maintain the capture of the spring ends using CM down pressure with your fingers on one hand while compressing the spring into the springs toroidal groove under the CM with the other hand fingers.701-4
  6. You can see this is a two hand multi finger process very difficult to photograph, as well as, do. : – ) However, it does work for the patient individual with good finger strength.Always maintain the CM down pressure, even after you have the spring in it’s circular trapped working position, until you can get the snap ring secure.701-6
  7. With the opposite side of the lever bushing firmly supported from behind, press the CM down until you expose the snap  ring groove on the CM enough to allow you to start the snap ring end into two sides of the grove. 701-7
  8. You can see the snap ring being started into the groove and finger pressure being exerted to maintain control of the CM. 701-8
  9. We recommend you use a small instrument like the tip of a small screw drive, as shown here to press the snap ring into the groove.701-9
  10.  The snap ring top will spring expand to accommodate the groove diameter and then should close over the diameter as the tips move past the center-line of the groove diameter. Once the snap ring nested in place you will be able to release the assembly and test the function. 701-10
  11. This is the lever bushing properly assembled into the trim (escutcheon) plate. Notice the closed ends of the spring in contact with the 90 degree formed down tab. 701-11
  12. You can down check the lever function of the assembly. You can place the leer over the lever mounting screw that projects from the exterior of the lever bushing without securing it to check for rotation up or down.  In this picture the lever was rotated partially to show the spring being compressed by the centering member. You should rotate the lever also in the opposite direction to ensure the range of motion necessary for full function of the assembly. 701-12

For these instructions old screen corners (Part # 141) has been used. But the instructions apply also to the New Style Screen Corners ( Part Number # 140). To Order: www.RandRwindow.com
1. The Screen Corner – you are only going to remove 2 screen corners at a time so you do not have to rescreen your whole screen

2. With a pointed object pull up the spline. The spline is located around the screen frame

3. If you cannot locate the edge of the spline or if it is not near a corner you will have to cut it with a knife

4. Gently pull spline and remove from the top part of the screen. Do not remove spline completely!

5. Notice how spline is only removed from the top and only a few inches down on both sides of the screen

6. Gently pull down screen mesh to the spline

7. Remove top part of frame by pulling straight up. Now 2 screen corners should be exposed

8. Remove broken screen corner and replace with new screen corner on both sides. If part of the old screen corner is broke off in the screen frame – use a pair of pliers to pull it out. If it won’t come out shove the broken part more into the screen frame so the new screen corner can fit all the way in.

9. Make sure you put in the new screen corner the same way as the old one. Repeat on other side

10. Put top frame with new screen coners back into side frame

11. Push top and side frame together so they are tight against the screen corner

13. Using spline tool (Part # 998) push in spline back into the screen frame

14. The spline may stretch when you push it back into the groove. If this happens cut off any excess

15.  Finish inserting spline with spline tool. Repeat steps to replace the bottom 2 screen corners.

Helpful tip: If one screen corner is broke then most likely the opposite diagonal screen comer is broke or at least cracked and should also be replaced.

How To Replace Old Style Handle Set With C Elite Handle Set #522

If you want to use C Elite Handle package to replace P/N 516 Upgrade Door Handle. Additional parts will be needed!You will need a new recessed mortise lock with the gray/sliver cylinder part# 518. You will also need the New Style Shim part #512-NEW or else the handle set will be loose. You will have to fill the top screw hole that will be left over from the old handle set. #837 – Adjustable Oak Threshold How To Replace & Adjust

To remove old threshold:

 

Use a #3 Philips bit on your drill – to unscrew the screws on the top of the old oak threshold all the way. Once screws are completely removed the old threshold will pull up.

 

There are T nuts in a T track underneath the threshold that the screws screw into.

 

You can reuse the old T nuts or replace the T nuts in the T track with the new T nuts provided with the new threshold

 

To replace the T nuts – you will remove the old T nuts by sliding them out of the track – there should be a space at one of the ends of the track for you to do this.

 

Take new T nuts and slide them into the track through the same space at one of the ends of the T track.

 

Replace with new threshold by aligning the T nuts to the screws in the threshold.

 

Screw in all screws into the T nuts below – be careful not to over tighten – and the screws are used to adjust the threshold as well.

 

Adjusting the Threshold:

 

Once the threshold is installed and all screws are screwed into the T nuts – the threshold can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the screws.

 

Tightening screws to lower the threshold or loosening the screws to it rise up.

8. Install new jambliners. Starting at the top of the jamb, slide the liner into the space at head as shown in PHOTO 10. Make sure the liner fits snugly up against the head of the frame.

8. Install new jambliners. Starting at the top of the jamb, slide the liner into the space at head as shown in PHOTO 10. Make sure the liner fits snugly up against the head of the frame.

9. Using a flat blade putty knife, place the blade on top of the sill gasket and slide the bottom of the jambliner into place PHOTO 11 & 12. Making sure the jambliner is fit tightly along the full length of the side jamb.

9. Starting with the bottom cover, place at the bottom of the jambliner and seat the cover firmly into place PHOTO 13 & 14 .

10. Re-install the wood jambliner covers.
Starting at the top PHOTO 15, slide the cover up into the space at the head of the frame and seat the
cover into place along the jambliner.

cover into place along the jambliner.

Make sure the dust block is to the outside of the liner as shown in PHOTO 16.

11. Prepare balance for the sash installation. Insert a
flat head screwdriver tip into the balance shoe,
PHOTO 17, sliding shoe downward stopping 12″
from the sill. Lock the balance shoe in place making
sure the lock shoe hub is in the open position.

11. Prepare balance for the sash installation. Insert a
flat head screwdriver tip into the balance shoe,
PHOTO 17, sliding shoe downward stopping 12″
from the sill. Lock the balance shoe in place making
sure the lock shoe hub is in the open position.

12. Locate top sash, which includes latch pins
on top rail. With clad side up and sash pins
furthest away, hold the sash horizontally,
tiliting sideways to a 30° angle allowing the
pins to pass to the outer track. Insert one
pin into the locked balance shoe, PHOTO 18.
Lower the sash to a full horizontal position
inserting the opposite side pin into the
balance shoe.
Depress tilt pins and push sash to a full
vertical position, advancing sash to the outer
tracks. Release tilt pins.
Repeat for the bottom sash inserting sash pins
into the inner tracks.

12. Locate top sash, which includes latch pins
on top rail. With clad side up and sash pins
furthest away, hold the sash horizontally,
tiliting sideways to a 30° angle allowing the
pins to pass to the outer track. Insert one
pin into the locked balance shoe, PHOTO 18.
Lower the sash to a full horizontal position
inserting the opposite side pin into the
balance shoe.
Depress tilt pins and push sash to a full
vertical position, advancing sash to the outer
tracks. Release tilt pins.
Repeat for the bottom sash inserting sash pins
into the inner tracks.

13. Check operation & locking functions
Depress tilt pins and push sash to a full vertical
position, PHOTO 19, advancing sash to the outer
tracks. Release tilt pins.Repeat for bottom sash inserting
sash pins into the inner tracks.

Quick How To video on removing a Hurd Casement Sash from a frame in a few easy steps.

If you are replacing the operator on a Casement there is no need to disconnect whole sash from the frame. Just disconnect the operator arms from the sash bracket and/or track shoe from the sash as shown in the 1st part of the video. No need to disconnect the top and bottom hinge. Note that in this video this is a new style window and parts have the SNAP RINGS on the Hinges and sash bracket. Older style windows and parts will have a sliver or black clip that moves to detach from the sash
